Women architects in Spain: a profession with history and future Architecture is an exciting profession that has attracted many many women throughout history . From Matilde Ucelay or Rita Fernández , the first Spaniards to obtain the title of architect, to current leaders such as Carme Pinós or Benedetta Tagliabue, women have left their mark on the design and construction of buildings, cities and landscapes. However, despite their talent and contribution, women architects continue to be a minority in Spain and Europe. What is the reason for this gender gap? What challenges and opportunities do women have in architecture? In this article we tell you some data and reflections on the situation of women in this discipline.

Study published by the Architects’ Council of Europe in 2016 How many women architects are there in Spain? According to the latest biannual study consulted by the Architects’ Council of Europe , published in 2016 , in Spain there were 54,800 registered architects, of which only 28% were women . This proportion is one of the lowest in Europe, where the average is 38% of female architects. At the opposite extreme is Croatia , the only European country where women outnumber men in signing projects: 59% compared to 41%. The countries with the greatest imbalance are Austria and the Netherlands, where only 20% of architects are women.
In the aforementioned study other
Types of information related to figures linked to architecture were also presented. Taking into account that in Spain there were 53,800 architects –data from 2016–, the calculations determined that for every 1,000 Spaniards there was one architect –taking as a reference a total census of almost 45 million people–. These data contrast with the fact that more and more women are enrolling in a career in Architecture.
